Monday February 22nd!

Reminders: Tomorrow is hot soup lunch! On Wednesday, it is Pink Shirt day! Thank you to those who have brought in bottle caps for science.  Language Arts: Today students were introduced to their new words of the week. Practice when you can! We will have our spelling test on Friday March 5th.  Math: Room 2 was introduced to one-step algebra equations, and this will be our focus for the whole week. Addition, subtraction,  multiplication and division will be practiced! Ask your child what a variable is? and to solve this equation....  k - 125 = 90.  Science: This week, students will be introduced to the history of the wheel and axle! Students will also make various connections with how other simple machines and needed to make a wheel and axle. Their learning will be extended over the next couple of weeks by making a simple machine using wheels and axles. If you have bottle caps handy (preferably the same size) please bring them in!   

Wednesday Feb. 17th

House keeping items: Next Wednesday, February 24th is Pink Shirt Day for anti-bullying awareness. Thursday is Hot Soup day!  This Friday students will have their spelling test and a "show what you know" for division!  Language Arts: This week our focus in room 2 has been on grammar. We are enhancing our writing by learning about plural nouns and irregular nouns. Math: We are wrapping up division this week and students have been working hard at practicing their division strategies. Today, students played games involving division and multiplication word problems. They learned how to decipher which operation to use to solve the problem- Do you multiply? or Do you divide? What language tells gives us clues for which operation we need to use?  Your child can log onto Mathletics for more practice!  Science: Making connections with the force of friction!! Reminders: There is no school for students Thursday, Friday or Monday, because of teachers convention and family day. Enjoy your long weekend and stay warm!  Here is what room 2 has been up to this week. Language Arts: Students completed a persuasive letter to a teacher in the school while applying their understanding of a structure of a paragraph. Teachers will be receiving their letters soon. Also, to pair along with our visual art, students learned about similes. They wrote a short poem about love and friendship. Next Friday, we will be having our spelling test.  Math: The grade 3's learned various strategies for solving division questions. Students were practicing to see which strategy works best for them (e.g., making groups, using arrays, repeated subtraction, or a number line). Next week, we will be learning how to use our multiplication facts for help solve for division. The grade 4's learned three ways to complete long division using whole numbers. Ask them about th

Happy Monday and happy February. Welcome back our HUB students, it is great to see you back at Vista Heights! Just a few reminders....with Valentine's coming up and if you are wanting to participate, your child can hand out valentine's day cards to each student. We are asking that it is cards only, and no additional items such as treats or candy etc. Please have your child come with their cards by Friday the 5th, so that they can quarantine for 72 hrs before handing out. Cards will be handed out to students next Wednesday, the 10th.  If you have any questions about this special day, feel free to contact me.  Here is what we have been learning in Room 2!
